Vote for Flatspot Longboard Shop: Small Business BC Awards 2016

Flatspot Longboard Shop is now 3 years old! We missed out on the Small Business BC Awards by only a small margin last year and are hoping to score a win this time around. Your vote helps!

Mischa Chandler, Founder and Managing Partner of Flatspot, is both a friend and now we’re partners. After working with Flatspot as a consultant in their first two years, I have now joined on to support them as a partner as I believe a strong local shop makes for an even stronger community.

Please have a look at the Small Business BC Awards currently under way. If you agree, please show Flatspot your support. Skateboard retail is really about skateboard community and Mischa and Flatspot put it first as part of operating the shop.

Small Business BC Awards: Vote for Flatspot Longboard Shop

Flatspot Longboard Shop has recently celebrated their 2 year anniversary and is looking forward to an even stronger future. Mischa Chandler, Founder and Managing Partner of Flatspot, is both a friend and a mentee. While I was Team Manger for Rayne Longboards and Vicious Griptape, Mischa was one of my sponsored team riders and his overflowing brain of wonderful thoughts helped lead us into a more defined mentor/mentee relationship when Mischa approached me about opening Flatspot.

Please have a look at the Small Business BC Awards currently under way. If you agree, please show Flatspot your support. Skateboard retail is really about skateboard community. The shops work on stiff margins with heavy competition from USA online retail and Mischa has been killing it here in BC.

Bringing Back Whistler Longboard Festival Skate x Shoot

One of my favorite events is the Whistler Longboard Festival and in particular the Skate x Shoot event.

While the core community tends to prefer the DH, the Skate x Shoot puts you out on a rolling, diverse course – the actual Olympic Biathlon track at the Whistler Olympic Park – where you are tested across a variety of riding skills and you get to shoot some guns! Skaters that have come out to the event are from all walks of skateboarding and no one has ever been disappointed, even when it poured rain.

Running an event is not a small task and is not all that cheap. Even for a small an event like this. Unfortunately, the event is in jeopardy because of a shortage of funding and we would all be bummed if it couldn’t happen.

Check out Rayne’s coverage of the 2013 event below and please hit up the Whistler Longboards Facebook page and show your support for the event.

North Vancouver City Fest Fun

Last week was a blur with a stag in Las Vegas to attend. I returned late Thursday for a busy Friday prep for the North Vancouver City Fest happening Saturday, May 3rd.

I really do enjoy volunteering and events. Volunteering always seems to be more rewarding then simply paid work and the people you get to meet and work with share a similar feeling in life. Events have this long lead up with a hammering finale, but then they’re done and you can sit back and breath and enjoy reaching the goal.

City of North Vancouver Award

I won an award from the City of North Vancouver!

I feel pretty honoured and appreciated to be recognized for a Civic Youth Award. I have only been working with CityFest for a few years now, but have been doing youth work since I was one. Never won an award for it before. Hell, getting minimum wage at a summer camp would have been nice, no award necessary 🙂

Thanks to Julianna Buitenhuis at the City of North Van, Dave Sattler our fearless CityFest leader and Mark Koop for having a coffee with me in 2011 and inviting us longboarders to join his skate event.

Bill Good Show Interview – Education For Longboarders

It’s one thing to get a call from the media for a sound bite or a quote, but live is a bit unnerving sometimes. Got to be careful with your words or you can get in trouble fast. With something like longboarding, there’s a whole community of skaters counting on me not to blow it any worse then the situation already is.

Ultimately, I believe bans will do nothing, we need a strong public-private partnerships to communicate and educate for success.
