Vote for Flatspot Longboard Shop: Small Business BC Awards 2016

Flatspot Longboard Shop is now 3 years old! We missed out on the Small Business BC Awards by only a small margin last year and are hoping to score a win this time around. Your vote helps!

Mischa Chandler, Founder and Managing Partner of Flatspot, is both a friend and now we’re partners. After working with Flatspot as a consultant in their first two years, I have now joined on to support them as a partner as I believe a strong local shop makes for an even stronger community.

Please have a look at the Small Business BC Awards currently under way. If you agree, please show Flatspot your support. Skateboard retail is really about skateboard community and Mischa and Flatspot put it first as part of operating the shop.

Joining the Skate[Slate] Team

After a hiatus from formal employment and a focus on local shops, events and the community at large, I’m stoked to announce that I have joined forces with Skate[Slate] and will be helping lead and learn with an incredibly talented team. Playing with Gifs – Mischa Chandler at Kensington

Mischa’s fun to take photos with and happy to let me shoot. I wasn’t intending to make gifs when I took these, so I have a few other photos to post, but I’m trying to play with photos not just shoot and edit, so here’s this.

I found two easy tutorials for making gifs in photoshop CS5: Basic Gif and one for adding kind of fade in / fade out effect to “smooth the gif out. I think both have their place, but made one of each of two different photo sets just to compare.

I met Mischa at Flatspot Shop and we headed out to Kensington Skatepark. Mischa took a couple laps of the stairs for me while I stood in the bowl. Here’s the gif no fade effect:

with the fade effect:

Sometimes things don’t go your way, good thing Mischa was wearing a helmet. I didn’t keep shooting when he went down, it was a thud, you get the idea. Fortunately, he’s was all good.

North Vancouver City Fest Fun

Last week was a blur with a stag in Las Vegas to attend. I returned late Thursday for a busy Friday prep for the North Vancouver City Fest happening Saturday, May 3rd.

I really do enjoy volunteering and events. Volunteering always seems to be more rewarding then simply paid work and the people you get to meet and work with share a similar feeling in life. Events have this long lead up with a hammering finale, but then they’re done and you can sit back and breath and enjoy reaching the goal.

King of Kona 2014

King of Kona was everything I hoped it would be, even with cracked ribs. 3 days of non-stop, around the clock, raw skateboarding.

This years’ event expanded on the success of the inaugural 2013 event by adding more food and carnage with BBQ going around the clock and a King of the Road style score card that pushed riders to not only nail tricks, but get rad and be a little stupid. I got the stupid end of the stick with organizer, Rayne team rider and homie Cam Frazier adding me to the list in a “wrestle the Papa and win” 5 point challenge.
